Cefixime trihydrate
Indications/Uses
As sequential treatment after initial IV chemotherapy w/ parenteral cephalosporin for resp tract infections, otitis media, UTI, gonorrhoea & typhoid fever.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Childn 8 mg/kg/day as a single dose or in 2 divided doses as 4 mg/kg every 12 hr. Typhoid fever 20 mg/kg/day in 2 divided doses or as a single dose. Infection due to S. pyogenes Administer at least 10 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cefixime, or other cephalosporin antibiotics. Patients w/ previous, immediate &/or severe hypersensitivity to penicillin or any β-lactam antibiotics. Preterm & newborn infants (0-27 days).
Special Precautions
Penicillin-sensitive patients. Discontinue immediately & initiate appropriate emergency measures if severe hypersensitivity or anaphylactic reactions occur. Antibiotic-associated diarrhoea caused by C. difficile. Consider diagnosis of pseudomembranous colitis in patients who develop diarrhoea. Contraindicated in the use of medicinal products inhibiting the intestinal peristalsis. Galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Not recommended in patients w/ renal insufficiency (CrCl <20 mL/min). Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhoea & stool changes. Nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, vomiting, flatulence; headache, dizziness; rash, pruritus, urticaria, drug fever, arthralgia; mild transient changes in liver & renal function.
Drug Interactions
May increase bioavailability w/ nifedipine. Possible increase of prothrombin time w/ anticoagulants.
